<p>When data travels across the internet, it doesn’t move as one solid piece.<br />It’s broken into small parts, sent through different paths, and reassembled at the other end.</p>
<p>Without rules:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>data could get lost</p>
</li>
<li><p>data could arrive in the wrong order</p>
</li>
<li><p>no one would know if the message was received</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>To avoid this chaos, the internet uses <strong>communication rules</strong>, called <strong>protocols</strong>.</p>
<hr />
<h2 id="heading-what-are-tcp-and-udp-high-level">What are TCP and UDP? (high level)</h2>
<p>At a very simple level:</p>
<ul>
<li><p><strong>TCP</strong> is careful and reliable</p>
</li>
<li><p><strong>UDP</strong> is fast and lightweight</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Both are used to send data, but they behave very differently.</p>
<p>Think of them as <strong>two different styles of communication</strong>.</p>
<hr />
<h2 id="heading-tcp-vs-udp-in-simple-words">TCP vs UDP in simple words</h2>
<h3 id="heading-tcp-safe-and-reliable">TCP (safe and reliable)</h3>
<p>TCP is like:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>a <strong>phone call</strong></p>
</blockquote>
<p>Before talking:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>both sides say hello</p>
</li>
<li><p>both sides agree to talk</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>During the call:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>messages are received in order</p>
</li>
<li><p>missing words are repeated</p>
</li>
<li><p>both sides know what was heard</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>TCP makes sure:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>data arrives</p>
</li>
<li><p>data arrives in order</p>
</li>
<li><p>errors are corrected</p>
</li>
</ul>
<hr />
<h3 id="heading-udp-fast-but-risky">UDP (fast but risky)</h3>
<p>UDP is like:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>an <strong>announcement on a loudspeaker</strong></p>
</blockquote>
<ul>
<li><p>no confirmation</p>
</li>
<li><p>no retry if something is missed</p>
</li>
<li><p>just send and move on</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>UDP does not care if:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>some data is lost</p>
</li>
<li><p>data arrives out of order</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>It only cares about <strong>speed</strong>.</p>

<hr />
<h2 id="heading-when-should-you-use-tcp">When should you use TCP?</h2>
<p>Use <strong>TCP</strong> when <strong>correctness is important</strong>.</p>
<p>Examples:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>loading a website</p>
</li>
<li><p>sending an email</p>
</li>
<li><p>logging into an app</p>
</li>
<li><p>transferring files</p>
</li>
<li><p>calling APIs</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>In all these cases:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>missing data is unacceptable</p>
</li>
<li><p>order matters</p>
</li>
<li><p>retries are required</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>If one byte is missing, the result is wrong.<br />That’s why TCP is used.</p>
<hr />
<h2 id="heading-when-should-you-use-udp">When should you use UDP?</h2>
<p>Use <strong>UDP</strong> when <strong>speed matters more than perfection</strong>.</p>
<p>Examples:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>live video streaming</p>
</li>
<li><p>online gaming</p>
</li>
<li><p>voice calls</p>
</li>
<li><p>live sports broadcasts</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>In these cases:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>small data loss is acceptable</p>
</li>
<li><p>waiting for retries would cause lag</p>
</li>
<li><p>speed gives a better experience</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>It’s better to lose a frame than to pause the video.</p>

<hr />
<h2 id="heading-what-is-http-and-where-does-it-fit">What is HTTP and where does it fit?</h2>
<p>This is where beginners often get confused.</p>
<p><strong>HTTP is NOT a transport protocol.</strong></p>
<p>HTTP is an <strong>application-level protocol</strong>.</p>
<p>That means:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>HTTP defines <em>how</em> requests and responses look</p>
</li>
<li><p>TCP defines <em>how</em> data is transported safely</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>HTTP says:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>“This is a request, this is a response.”</p>
</blockquote>
<p>TCP says:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>“I’ll make sure it reaches safely.”</p>
</blockquote>
<hr />
<h2 id="heading-how-tcp-and-http-work-together">How TCP and HTTP work together</h2>
<p>HTTP <strong>runs on top of TCP</strong>.</p>
<p>Simple flow:</p>
<ol>
<li><p>TCP connection is created</p>
</li>
<li><p>HTTP request is sent over that connection</p>
</li>
<li><p>HTTP response comes back</p>
</li>
<li><p>TCP ensures delivery</p>
</li>
<li><p>Connection is closed (or reused)</p>
</li>
</ol>

<p><img src="https://mdn.github.io/shared-assets/images/diagrams/http/overview/http-layers.svg" alt="https://mdn.github.io/shared-assets/images/diagrams/http/overview/http-layers.svg" /></p>
<p>Without TCP:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>HTTP messages could be incomplete</p>
</li>
<li><p>pages could break</p>
</li>
<li><p>APIs would be unreliable</p>
</li>
</ul>
<hr />
<h2 id="heading-why-http-does-not-replace-tcp">Why HTTP does NOT replace TCP</h2>
<p>This is a very common question.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>“If HTTP sends data, why do we need TCP?”</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Because:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>HTTP does not handle packet loss</p>
</li>
<li><p>HTTP does not ensure order</p>
</li>
<li><p>HTTP does not retransmit data</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>HTTP <strong>depends</strong> on TCP to do all that work.</p>
<p>You can think of it like:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>HTTP → message format</p>
</li>
<li><p>TCP → delivery service</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Both are needed.</p>
<hr />
<h2 id="heading-is-http-the-same-as-tcp">Is HTTP the same as TCP?</h2>
<p>No.</p>
<ul>
<li><p><strong>TCP</strong> → how data travels</p>
</li>
<li><p><strong>HTTP</strong> → what the data means</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>They work together, but they solve <strong>different problems</strong>.</p>
